Camera roll 365 is the fifth in a series of ten rolls (361 through 370) that show Ray Hicks, a Shannon County blacksmith, using his forge, anvil, and hammer to make a fishing gig. The gig is a pronged and barbed spearhead forged out of steel. It is attached to the end of a long pole and used to spear fish. Gig fishing at night is an old tradition in Shannon County, and a good gig, such as the one Ray Hicks is making, is a prized possession. Like many hunting and fishing traditions, gig fishing grew out of the necessity to eat and feed one's family. After working all day in the timber or at farming, men would go out on the rivers at night and fish. Night gigging is done from special flat-bottomed boats rigged with gaslights. The boat has to be able to navigate shallow waters, yet be heavy and stable enough not to move from under the gigger when the gig is thrown. The gig itself must be shaped and tempered just right. The gig has to pass through a fish without tearing the fish apart and the barbs must hold the fish tightly enough to pull it out of the water, yet cleanly release the fish into the boat when the pole is given a quick jerk. The gig also has to be flexible enough not to break when it hits rocks, but hard enough to hold its point. It takes many hours, a lot of hard work, and considerable skill to make a gig. The metal must be heated to different temperatures depending on the task. Welding, which fuses the metal, requires the highest temperatures; simple bending requires the lowest. Hicks can work on the gig only a minute or two at a time before having to reheat it in the forge. This series of camera rolls shows all of the steps involved in making a gig form beginning to end. The rolls are numbered in the order they were shot. Footage shot on June 7, 1979, in Shannon County, Missouri.
