There are three different type of half cells depending on the physical states of the reversible electrode, namely the metal - ion half cell (eg Zn2+/Zn), the non metal - ion half cell or gas - ion half cell (eg H+/H2) and the ion - ion half cell (Fe3+/Fe2+).
