In this video we go through the 3 Must-Know Amine reactions, 3 Must-Know Phenylamine or Aniline reactions and 3 Must-Know Amide reactions.
Must-Know Amine Reaction:
1. Neutralisation reaction of amine to form ammonium salt using dilute sulphuric acid at room temperature
2. Nucleophilic substitution of primary amine to form secondary amine using chloroalkane in ethanol, heat in sealed tube
3. Condensation of amine to form amide using acid chloride at room temperature
Must-Know Phenylamine or Aniline Reaction:
1. Neutralisation reaction of phenylamine to form phenylammonium salt using dilute sulphuric acid at room temperature
2. Electrophilic substitution of phenylamine to form 2-bromophenylamine and 4-bromophenylamine using Br2 in organic solvent
3. Electrophilic substitution of phenylamine to form 2,4,6-tribromophenylamine using aqueous Br2 at room temperature
Must-Know Amide Reaction:
1. Acidic hydrolysis of amide to form carboxylic acid and ammonium salt using dilute sulphuric acid, heat or reflux
2. Alkaline hydrolysis of amide to form salt of carboxylic acid and ammonia or amine using dilute sodium hydroxide, heat or reflux
3. Reduction of amide to form amine using lithium aluminium hydride in dry ether, followed by water at room temperature
Memorising the reagents and conditions for these nitrogen compound reactions is an integral part of Organic Chemistry, so I've added a short memory test.
Let's see if you can remember all of them!
