New Year is a time for resolutions. That includes for Party controlled newspapers.
This posting by state-run People's Daily on January 1st on its Sina Weibo account has caught the attention of netizens.
People's Daily says that in the New Year, it will, quote "try hard to speak the truth, and write about the truth".
That solemn pledge is now being mocked.
This Weibo user says, quote "this means, whatever you wrote before were lies...It's a basic requirement for a media to speak the truth, but for you, it's something you need to try hard to do."
Another writes: "that's remarkable, the People's Daily will try hard to speak the truth."
People's Daily is an organ of the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese regime has been expanding the paper overseas in recent years, as part of its "soft power" approach to influence international discourse.
