Different simple molecules have different types of intermolecular forces between them. There are 3 types of IMF attractions:
1. Van der Waals forces, instantaneous dipole-induced dipole attraction or dispersion forces between non-polar molecules
2. Permanent dipole-permanent dipole attraction between polar molecules
3. Hydrogen Bond between molecules that contains H-F, H-O or H-N bonds.
In order to systematically determine what type of IMF a given molecule has, the following sequence is recommended:
1. Determine if H-F, H-O or H-N bond present. If so, H-bond between molecules. If not, move to step 2.
2. Determine if polar bonds present. If not, molecule is non-polar and Van der Waals forces between molecules. If polar bonds present, move to step 3.
3. Determine, with the shape of molecule, if dipole moments cancel out completely. If so, molecule is non-polar and Van der Waals forces between molecules. If not, molecule is polar and permanent dipole - permanent dipole attraction between molecules.
