
The Standard Electrode Potential of a reversible electrode is the potential difference between that electrode and the standard Hydrogen electrode measured under standard conditions. Since all reversible electrodes and half equations found in the Data Booklet are all written in reduction form, the Standard Electrode Potential is also known as the Standard Reduction Potential.
The Standard Electrode Potential, E, measures the likelihood of reduction of the reversible electrode. The more positive the E, the more likely the reduction. Conversely, the more negative the E, the more likely the oxidation. This concept is fundamental in Electrochemistry and it is consistently applied in most parts of this topic.
