A stampede in an elementary school in central China's early today has killed four students, and injured 11 others, state-run media reported.
The kids at Qinji Elementary School in Xiangyang city were believed to have been leaving their dormitory at around 5.40am when the stamped happened.
More than 80 students crowded into the large front stairs and corridors of the building. Reports suggest they were crushed between the weight of the crowd and a locked gate. State-run CCTV reports the gate then collapsed, leading to the stampede.
The school principle has been taken into custody, according to the principal from an affiliated school.
The four-story school building was built in 1990, said CCTV. It says an investigation is underway to find out exactly what caused the incident.
