Chinese state-run oil giant Sinopec says it's investigating an official accused of accepting escort services in exchange for approving a lucrative contract.
The official, surnamed Zhang, has denied the allegations. But the case has called into question the bidding process at Sinopec.
A staff from another state-run company in Henan province, who identified herself with the surnamed Liu, says state-owned businesses often bypass proper business procedures.

"No one supervises them. Most state-run companies are dependent on the government and there is no economic efficiency to speak of. As long as these companies or the government are involved, the bidding process takes place behind closed doors."
The accusations against Zhang first surfaced online. According to Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post, US-listed technology company Agilent Technologies allegedly provided the escort service to Zhang. It then threatened Zhang with indecent video tapes of her, when Sinopec was calling for bids to provide machinery for a plant in Hubei province.
Agilent won that bid. But it's been accused of swapping a $800,000 software it was contracted to supply with a much cheaper version, and made money from this in the process.
State-run China News Service reports on Thursday that Zhang insists the bidding process was legal. She also filed a complaint with Beijing police against the online reports.
