The parents of a 31-year-old found hanging in his Singaporean apartment last June
Now, they're in Singapore, as a 12-day coroner's inquiry into their son's death begins.
Shane Todd was an American research engineer. He was working for the Singapore Institute of Microelectronics or IME.
Singaporean police ruled Shane's death as a suicide. His parents suspect foul play.
[Mary Todd, Shane's Mother]:
"We believe China and Singapore are illegally transferring technology, our technology, from the United States. We believe, Shane signed a document as a U.S. citizen that he would not transfer the technology to China, whom we are not friends with."
They say, while their son's death is tragic, the security implications for the US and other countries could be more serious.
[Rick Todd, Shane's Father]:
"This is far bigger than our son's death. This is a matter of national security. Our goal is to take it to a congressional investigation."
Shane's parents say they found out through his hard drive that he was working on a project between state-linked IME and Chinese telecommunications company, Huawei Technologies.
Shane's work involved the advanced semiconductor material Gallium Nitride, which has commercial and military purposes.
Shane reportedly saw a doctor before his death, who then referred him to a psychiatrist. He also complained to his girlfriend of working in a dishonest environment.
Huawei has denied it had any dealings with IME involving Gallium Nitrade.
Shane's parent say regardless of this inquiry's findings, they will ask the US Congress to carry out its own investigations.
