China's PMI Falls Short of Expectation in January NTDonChina

China's Purchasing Managers' Index, or PMI, dropped to 50.4 in January compared with 50.6 in December, according to the National Bureau of Statistics and China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing. A PMI over 50 indicates expansion.

Analysts at HSBC released an estimate for China's PMI on January 24 of 51.9, while a median estimate from 12 analysts was 52.

China's statistics bureau said the January PMI for small businesses in China fell from 48.1 to 46.2 in December, and medium-sized businesses dropped from 49.9 to 49.7. The PMI for large companies increased from 51.1to 51.3.

The official report from the statistics bureau came out on Thursday. It also showed export orders contracted, highlighting concerns about the health of global demand.
