Chengdu Panda Base to Help Increase Genetic Diversity NTDonChina

Chengdu's Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is aiming to produce stronger panda cubs. The base has implemented a breeding project by carefully selecting parent pandas for artificial breeding. The stronger cubs will help increase genetic diversity of the species.

These newly born cubs in the incubators are being reared, with a focus on quality.

[Zhang Zhihe, Director, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding]:
"We used to focus only on the quantity of newborn cubs. Now we also attach importance to the quality of the cubs and the contributions they make to the whole species."

Pandas at the base are divided into five levels based on how suitable they are for breeding. And only those in first three levels are chosen for artificial breeding to produce stronger cubs.

Eight cubs were born at the base last year through this breeding process. Although it's a lower number, the cubs helped to increase genetic diversity of panda species compared to the 20 cubs born in the previous year.

The giant panda is a rare species facing extinction. Genetic diversity of pandas helps the species survive for a longer time.

Artificial panda breeding work worldwide made a historical breakthrough in 2012, with the captive population of pandas reaching 341.
